KU summer theatre stages Lanford Wilson's 'Talley's Folly'

LAWRENCE -- "Talley's Folly," the second play in Lanford Wilson's "Talley Family" trilogy, will close the Kansas Summer Theatre season at the University of Kansas. The KU Department of Theatre and Film's University Theatre will stage the romantic comedy at 7:30 p.m. July 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, on Stage Too! in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre in Murphy Hall.

" Talley's Folly," first produced in 1979, was nominated for several Tony Awards and won the Pulitzer Prize and other awards in 1980.

The KST production is directed by Dennis Christilles, associate professor of theatre and film. Mark Reaney, professor of theatre and film, is scenic designer, and Tim Boeshaar, Shawnee Mission senior, is lighting designer. Costume and makeup designer is Kelly Vogel, Tonganoxie graduate student.

" Talley's Folly" shows one evening in the courtship of two unlikely lovers, Sally Talley and Matt Friedman. Sally is from a conservative, small-town, wealthy family of bigoted Methodists, and Matt is a Jewish accountant 12 years older than Sally. The story opens with the frank revelation that this is a play, the set represents a boathouse surrounded by weeds and trees, and Matt speaks directly to the audience, announcing the play will run for 97 minutes with no intermission. He is somewhat nervous as he reveals that, one year earlier, he met Sally at a dance and the two were together in this same boathouse. He has returned to ask for her hand.

Because of the unwillingness of her family to embrace different ways of thinking, Sally's only pleasures come outside her home, when she is at work or with friends.

General admission tickets for "Talley's Folly" are on sale at the Lied Center ticket office, by phone at the University Theatre, (785) 864-3982, and online at Tickets are $10 for the public, $9 for senior citizens and KU faculty and staff, and $6 for all students.

Road construction on Naismith Drive is temporarily closing the circle drive and west entrance to Murphy Hall. Access to the theatre can be made through the southwest entrance of Murphy Hall between the original building and the newer music and dance addition. Patrons are asked to call (785) 864-3985 to get the latest information on how to get into the theatre.
