Lambda Sigma sophomore honor society welcomes 32 new KU members

LAWRENCE -- Thirty-two University of Kansas freshmen have been initiated as 2005-06 members of the Tau chapter of Lambda Sigma, a national sophomore honor society based on scholarship, leadership and service.

Admission to Lambda Sigma is based on grade-point average and leadership. Freshmen who have at least a 3.5 GPA are invited to apply in the spring of their freshman year. Each year's newly initiated members elect officers and serve during their sophomore year at KU.

Members each year select their own philanthropic projects, which vary from year to year. In the past, KU Lambda Sigma members have sponsored a contest that awarded one KU student the opportunity to switch places with Chancellor Robert Hemenway for a day, volunteered at the Jubilee Cafe to provide breakfast for the homeless, and sponsored a booth at a holiday party for children to make reindeer out of candy canes.

Lambda Sigma, established at KU in 1973, is one of the national organization's honor chapters for its level of participation in national activities as well as noteworthy achievements at the local university level. Jennifer Alderdice, director of student programs at the Kansas Alumni Association, is Tau chapter adviser.

New Lambda Sigma members, all students who will be in their second year at KU, are listed by their hometowns, majors, parents' names, high schools and office held.
