KU to host International Writing Centers conference July 10-15

LAWRENCE --Sixty writing center directors from 25 states and one country will gather at the University of Kansas July 10 through 15 for the International Writing Centers Association Summer Institute.

Participants will take part in an intensive week of seminars, discussions and mentoring with writing center colleagues from large and small colleges and universities, community colleges and secondary schools.

The IWCA Summer Institute, in its third year, provides directors with a mentoring network of professional contacts and opportunities to learn about the theoretical and practical considerations of directing a writing center. Leaders, also drawn from a variety of schools, colleges and universities, share specialties that range from technology in the writing center to peer tutoring and writing across the curriculum.

This year's institute is hosted by the KU Writing Center and the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success, and sponsored by KU, Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and the International Writing Centers Association. In addition, scholarship funding and texts are provided by Bedford St. Martin's, Heinemann and Longman book publishers.

The KU Writing Center, with satellite locations called Writer's Roosts, is an interdisciplinary writing support service for KU students interested in developing their writing skills. Professional writers in every field receive useful criticism from their peers and editors to help them develop, revise and polish their writing. At the KU Writing Center, students can improve their writing by working one-on-one with a trained peer consultant. The center was established in 1998.
