Chancellor visits Asian universities, research institute to expand links to KU

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway will depart today on a 10-day visit to Asia to meet with KU alumni and sign exchange agreements that will lead to expanded opportunities for KU students and faculty to study or do research abroad.

KU has nearly 2,000 alumni and affiliates -- such as scholars and exchange students -- living in China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. All expenses for the trip are being paid by private funds.

The chancellor's itinerary includes:

  • A formal visit to Beijing University to discuss a memorandum of understanding about possible future partnerships, and a dinner for a group of Jayhawks now living in Beijing.
  • A dinner given by the KU-Korean Alumni Association. Several members of the group contributed funds for KU's Korean War Memorial and attended its dedication in April on the Lawrence campus. In Seoul, the chancellor will host a luncheon for a select group of Korean educational foundation leaders.
  • The chancellor will host a luncheon for Mou-Hui King, a 1944 engineering graduate who is chairman emeritus of China Steel in Taiwan, and a reception for KU graduates and affiliates who live in Taiwan.
  • Signings of memorandums of understanding between KU and the National Chengchi University and the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute. NCCU President Jei-Cheng Cheng will host a dinner in the chancellor's honor.

The chancellor is being accompanied by Jeff Weinberg, assistant to the chancellor, and Diana Carlin, dean of the Graduate School and International Programs. The chancellor returns to KU June 20. Weinberg and Carlin are also visiting Japan, where Carlin is giving a lecture and meeting with KU alumni and students who are studying in Japan at partner universities. Carlin and Weinberg will return June 23.
