Statements on death of KU graduate student Yihong Zhu

University of Kansas Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger and two other university officials issued the following statements today in response to the death of graduate student Yihong Zhu, 29-year-old doctoral student in molecular biosciences. His body was discovered June 14 in his Lawrence apartment. In May, Mr. Zhu had informed others that he was returning to China to address a health problem. A native of Qiqihar in Heilongjian Province, China, he graduated from Nankai University in Tianjin, China, in 1999 and enrolled in graduate work at KU in fall 2000.

Provost Shulenburger:
" Far from his homeland, Yihong Zhu was pursuing an ambitious academic dream at the University of Kansas. We are deeply saddened by his death. On behalf of the entire university, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Zhu's family and friends."

Kathy Suprenant, professor and chair of molecular biosciences:
" Words lack the power to convey our genuine sense of loss for this kind and intelligent young man. The faculty, staff and students of the Department of Molecular Biosciences extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Yihong Zhu."

Joe Potts, director of International Student and Scholar Services:
" All of us in the Graduate School and International Programs have Yihong Zhu's family in our thoughts and prayers. The Chinese Student Association and other friends and members of the KU international community have joined us in mourning his death and offering assistance to the family."
