High school students from four states participate in KU pharmacy school camp

LAWRENCE -- Twenty-two juniors and seniors from high schools in four states are participating in the 2005 University of Kansas School of Pharmacy summer camp. The camp began on June 19 and concludes June 24.

Eleven boys and 11 girls from Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota and North Carolina are learning what pharmacists do in their daily routines; the education and skills needed to become a pharmacist; and the code of ethics that guides the pharmacy profession, according to Gene Hotchkiss, associate dean of pharmacy at KU.

The students will tour area hospital, retail and specialty practice pharmacies, as well as pharmacy research laboratories, to see pharmacists in action. They also will conduct blood glucose and hypertension screening procedures and learn how to dispense a prescription.

Finally, students will receive career counseling and information about the KU School of Pharmacy. The students are staying at Ellsworth Hall during the camp.

" Our summer camps attract high-quality students, and many of them decide to come to KU for their schooling," Hotchkiss said.
