KU music education senior receives $1,500 Elin J. Stene scholarship

LAWRENCE -- Heather Brown, Topeka senior in music education at the University of Kansas, received the $1,500 Elin J. Stene Music Scholarship from the Lawrence Alumnae and Patroness chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), an international professional music fraternity for women.

Brown, who is the daughter of Kent and Connie Brown and is a graduate of Seaman High School, received her award May 7 at the annual SAI Rose Luncheon, held jointly by the Lawrence Alumnae and Patroness chapter and the KU Beta Beta student chapter. Brown is vice president of membership for the KU student chapter.

The Elin J. Stene Music Scholarship was created through a bequest by Elin Jorgensen Stene, former KU professor of music education and charter member of the Lawrence Alumnae and Patroness Chapter of SAI. The scholarships are administered through the KU Department of Music and Dance and the KU Endowment Association.

Recipients of the scholarship are selected by the Lawrence Alumnae and Patroness Chapter of SAI and must be juniors or above who qualify academically and musically. Brown was the sole winner of the scholarship for 2005-06.

" Heather is an outstanding musician and scholar and one of our most involved students in music and dance," said Larry Mallett, chair of the department. "She plays clarinet in the KU Wind Ensemble and saxophone in the KU Jazz Ensemble. I'd like to thank SAI for awarding this scholarship to such a deserving upper-division student."

For more information on Brown's accomplishments or the Elin J. Stene Music Scholarship, please contact the School of Fine Arts at (785) 864-3421.
