KU fine arts students earn scholarships, awards at annual gallery presentation

LAWRENCE -- During an annual spring exhibition and competition, the University of Kansas Department of Art recognized 41 students with about $160,000 in scholarships and awards. A KU faculty committee judged the nominated students' art projects displayed on the third and fourth floors of KU's Art & Design Building.

During the jury process, 28 art students received about $126,000 in scholarships of varying amounts, while 13 students received $32,750 in award grants. The 2005 awards were made possible by the Richard M. and Gertrude Hollander Family Foundation.

Richard M. Hollander Sr., a sculptor who lived and worked primarily in Kansas City, Mo., understood the challenges facing young artists and so established the foundation in 1993 to provide scholarships and awards for graduate and undergraduate students. In addition to the donor's son, Richard Hollander Jr. of Kansas City, Mo., KU members of the Hollander selection committee included Judith McCrea, art department chair; Peter Thompson, professor emeritus of art; and Yoonmi Nam, assistant professor of art.

Scholarship and award winners are listed at by hometown, year in school, parents' names and high school, when available, and their awards.
