KU to host women engineers conference featuring Boeing, NASA representatives

LAWRENCE -- Speakers from NASA and Boeing Commercial Airplanes will speak at the University of Kansas School of Engineering this weekend when KU hosts more than 150 engineers and students at the 2005 Society of Women Engineers Region I Conference.

Elizabeth Lund, director of the Interiors Responsibility Center of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, in Everett, Wash., will address the gathering during Saturday's luncheon banquet. The Boeing center designs, manufactures, assembles and integrates a wide range of interior systems for production, aftermarket and spares for Boeing commercial jets. Lund has led key Commercial Airplanes engineering groups, including serving as 737 deputy chief project engineer .

Heather Paul, a NASA project engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, will be the speaker at the evening banquet on Saturday. Paul is part of a team of engineers that creates some of the tools astronauts use during space walks to build and maintain the International Space Station. She also works with the Advanced Space Suit, looking at and developing new technologies for suits to be used in planetary exploration.

Lacey Hull, junior in aerospace engineering from Wamego and KU Society of Women Engineers program chair, said the conference, which runs Friday evening through Sunday, fosters communication and networking among female engineers and future engineers.

Region I includes chapters in Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas. It also will draw attendees from South Dakota.
