Award-winning journalist to discuss global health at KU Self symposium

LAWRENCE -- Laurie Garrett, senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations and prize-winning journalist, will be the guest speaker at the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship Symposium Lecture at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 7, at Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union at the University of Kansas.

Garrett will discuss "Betrayal of Trust: Critical Issues in Global Public Health." The event is free and open to the public.

Garrett is an expert on global health with a focus on newly emerging and re-emerging diseases, public health, and their effects on foreign policy and national security. As a medical and science writer for Newsday in New York City, she became the only writer ever to receive all three of the most prestigious awards in journalism: the Peabody Award, two Polk Awards and the Pulitzer Prize.

Garrett also is the best-selling author of "The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance" and "Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health." She has written for many publications, including Foreign Affairs, Esquire, Vanity Fair, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and Current Issues in Public Health.
She appears frequently on national television programs, including "Nightline," "The Jim Lehrer NewsHour," "The Charlie Rose Show," "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Dateline."

The Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship is a four-year doctoral fellowship for study at KU. Self fellows demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole. The fellowship was endowed by Madison and Lila Self, who met at KU as undergraduates. Madison "Al" Self received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from KU in 1943.
