KU to hold regional intramural basketball tournament March 18-20

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Office of Recreation Services will hold the Rock Chalk Classic intramural basketball tournament March 18 through 20 at the Student Recreation Fitness Center.

KU was selected by the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association as one of eight universities to host a regional tournament. The Rock Chalk Classic will include up to 36 men's and women's teams from around the region. Winning teams will advance to the National Intramural Basketball Championships April 15 through 17 at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

The tournament format will feature three or four team pools with the top two teams emerging to continue in single elimination bracket play. The championship games in both the men's and women's divisions are scheduled for March 20 in Allen Fieldhouse. The women's championship game will tip off at 1 p.m. and the men's game at 2:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at the end of the men's championship game. All games are open to the public.

Twenty-two student officials from other universities and colleges will join two KU student officials in officiating the tournament. Two officials from this region will be chosen to officiate at the national tournament in Atlanta.

The National Intramural Recreational Sports Association was founded in 1950 at Dillard University in New Orleans by 20 African-American men's and women's intramural directors from 11 historically black colleges. Today NIRSA is a nonprofit membership organization serving a network of more than 4,000 highly trained professionals, students and associate members in the recreational sports field throughout the United States, Canada and other countries.
