Dole Institute 'Women in Politics' event to feature KC mayor, ABC-TV anchor

LAWRENCE -- The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas will celebrate Women's History Month by presenting a "Women in Politics and the Media" program at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 17. The event is free and open to the public.

ABC correspondent and weekend "Good Morning America" anchor Kate Snow will moderate the discussion featuring:

  • Becky Norton Dunlop, vice president of external relations for the Heritage Foundation who has held senior roles at the White House, Interior and Justice departments as well as being secretary of natural resources for Virginia
  • Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Kay Barnes
  • Former five-term U.S. Rep. Karen McCarthy, D-Mo.
  • Harvard undergraduate Lia Larson, editor of "Skirting Tradition," a collection of writings by prominent women in politics

"This is a very exciting program," said Bill Lacy, Dole Institute director. "Women play a very prominent role in politics and the media, and this is a perfect time to discuss their increasing influence. It's also a way to motivate women students to get involved in politics and civic activities and to have prominent women tell how they got involved."

The Dole Institute, established in 1997 to honor the former Kansas senator and KU alumnus, is designed to foster new thinking on major policy issues and to encourage student participation and citizen involvement in public service. The Dole archives contain one of the nation's largest congressional collections.

Located on KU's West Campus near the Lied Center, the institute features a Visitors Hall, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. For more information, call (785) 864-4900 or visit
