Professor of ecology and evolutionary biology wins graduate educator award

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas professor Norman Slade has won the 2004 Louise Byrd Graduate Educator Award.

Slade, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, will be honored during KU's doctoral hooding ceremony at 4 p.m., May 21 at the Lied Center of Kansas on KU's West Campus.
The Byrd Award honors faculty members who have demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment to graduate students and graduate education, as well as distinguishing themselves as scholars. The award includes a $1,000 cash prize.

Slade joined the KU faculty in 1972. His awards include the Kemper Fellowship for Teaching in 1999 and the Favorite Professor of Biology award from the Class of 2000. He is the author of numerous publications and has sat on more than 100 doctoral and master's committees.

The Louise Byrd Graduate Educator Award was established in 1984 in memory of Louise E. Byrd, former longtime secretary of the KU Graduate School. Byrd was noted for her deep commitment to graduate students.
