Barbara Romzek named interim dean of KU College of Liberal Arts & Sciences

LAWRENCE -- Associate Dean Barbara Romzek will become interim dean of the University of Kansas' College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on July 1 when Kim Wilcox steps down to become provost at Michigan State University, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger announced today.

Romzek, a professor of public administration, has served as associate dean of the college since 2000 and recently chaired the university's team for its ten-year reaccreditation review by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.

She received her doctorate in political science from the University of Texas-Austin, and came to KU as an assistant professor in 1979. She served as chair of public administration department from 1988 to 1993. She is an internationally recognized scholar in public management accountability and is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration, which Congress chartered to improve governance nationally and internationally.

" Barbara Romzek is a talented administrator who has a thorough knowledge of the workings of the college and the entire university. I'm pleased that she has agreed to assume the responsibilities of dean when Kim leaves us this summer," Shulenburger said. "One of the marks of good leadership is the presence of capable associates, and the associate deans in CLA&S are illustrative of this truism. I know that Barbara will continue the progress that the College has undergone during Kim's tenure."

A search for a permanent dean will begin in the fall.

The college is the largest academic unit at KU with more than 50 departments and programs, 650 faculty, and 17,000 students.
