KU appoints Sen. Roberts' legislative director to government relations post

LAWRENCE -- Keith Yehle, legislative director for U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., has been named director of government relations for the University of Kansas, Executive Vice Chancellor for External Affairs Paul Carttar announced today.

" We are thrilled to have on our team someone with Keith's experience and skill set," said Carttar. "He is a KU graduate and native Kansan who is well-schooled in legislative advocacy and highly committed to public service. He will add tremendous value for KU and the state of Kansas."

Yehle (pronounced YAY-lee), who has 14 years of experience on Capitol Hill and has served as Roberts' legislative director since 2001, will begin at KU June 6.

" Keith Yehle is an immensely talented individual whose thoughtful and hard work on behalf of Kansas has been vital to me and my staff," said Roberts. "I am going to miss him, but I am glad to see he will be doing important work for higher education in our state. KU is lucky to have Keith on its team."

Yehle, who will report to Carttar, will head KU's governmental relations activities at the state and federal levels. In this capacity, he will work with schools, departments and the administration on the Lawrence and Medical Center campuses to coordinate and advance the university's legislative priorities with the Kansas Legislature in Topeka and the Kansas congressional offices in Washington, D.C. Yehle will work particularly closely with the KU Center for Research, research units on both campuses and the KU Medical Center's government relations team.

Yehle also will serve as a senior member of KU's external affairs team, which has broad responsibility for outreach and marketing programs intended to build productive relationships with the public in support of KU's mission.

" I am excited to have the opportunity to apply my skills and experience to the benefit of an institution and a state about which I care deeply," said Yehle. "My wife and I look forward to raising our family in Kansas."

A native of Overland Park, Yehle graduated from KU in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in political science. In 1998, he completed the Senior Managers in Government Program at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Before joining Roberts' staff in 1997 as a legislative assistant, Yehle worked for Kansas Congresswoman Jan Meyers for six years. He was deputy legislative director for Roberts from 1998 to 2001.

As legislative director for Roberts, Yehle has developed policy, legislative and political positions on issues ranging from appropriations to science and technology. He also served as Roberts' liaison in Kansas with local governments, state agencies, universities and other important Kansas organizations.
