Appleseed Cast drummer ends tour, heads for medical school after graduation

LAWRENCE -- A University of Kansas student who has marched to the beat of a different drum plans to head to medical school after he walks down the Hill during KU's commencement ceremony May 22.

Josh Baruth, Lawrence senior and former drummer with the Appleseed Cast, started at KU in 1996 studying sociology, but his interest in the sciences and classics steered him toward other classes. By the end of his sophomore year, Baruth knew he wanted to study medicine; however, a stronger passion for music soon diverted his attention.

Baruth, who grew up near Rochester, Minn., initially was attracted to KU in part because of the nationally renowned music scene of Lawrence. He played in several bands during his first three years at KU, but in 1999 an up-and-coming band came calling.

" I received an offer from the Appleseed Cast to join and tour," Baruth said. "I delayed school and accepted the opportunity because this was something I always wanted to do."

Baruth describes the next four years as "wonderful and draining all at the same time." During tours across Europe, Great Britain, Scandanavia, Canada and the United States, the money was tight but the people he met made the sacrifice worthwhile.

The band made about a dozen recordings and received national acclaim. But last summer, Baruth said, he decided that "the magic of the band was diminishing," and its future didn't seem so appealing. "I decided that finishing up my undergraduate degree at KU was worth more of my time," he said.

Baruth returned to KU in summer 2004 and will graduate this year with a degree in classical languages. After a one-year hiatus the Appleseed Cast is back on the road with a new drummer. Baruth hopes to enroll in medical school by fall 2006.

He said he has no regrets and plans to keep busy with musical projects in his spare time. "Music will always be a huge part of my life," he said.

He is the son of Carroll and Kathy Baruth, Stewartville, Minn, and is a graduate of Stewartville High School.
