Statement: investigation of alleged hazing, underage drinking at fraternity

Marlesa Roney, vice provost for student success at the University of Kansas, released the following statement in response to a preliminary report from the national headquarters of Kappa Sigma fraternity regarding its investigation into a hazing allegation. The fraternity's national organization today told the university that it found little evidence of hazing but did uncover evidence of underage drinking and other inappropriate behavior. The organization will hold a hearing for the chapter in January.

" We are concerned by the national Kappa Sigma organization's preliminary report to us today. We will withhold final judgment until the review and hearing are complete. However, it should be clear to all that this university has zero tolerance for hazing of any kind. It is an affront to human dignity and will not be tolerated.

" We are equally concerned about preliminary findings of problems with underage drinking. The university has campus programs and campaigns to educate students about alcohol and their legal and personal responsibilities. We are committed to this important effort to keep our students safe.

" The university's Student Involvement & Leadership Center and its Fraternity and Sorority Life department will closely monitor the full review and findings. At the appropriate time, the university will swiftly take whatever action is warranted ."
