French riots are subject of public forum hosted by KU's European Studies center

LAWRENCE -- The European Studies program and the Department of French and Italian at the University of Kansas will host a public forum with faculty and graduate students to discuss the recent rioting in France and the issues surrounding the causes.

" Is Paris Burning? Open Forum on Recent Violence in France" will be held between 4 and 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union.

Civil unrest began Oct. 27. The violence was sparked by the accidental deaths of two teenagers in an electrical sub-station in Paris. After several days of rioting in the French capital, it spread to poor high-immigration neighborhoods across the country.

The panel includes Bernard Cornet, distinguished professor of economics; Van Kelly, associate professor and chairman of the Department of French and Italian; and Ronald Francisco, professor of political science. Students participating in the panel will be Rokhaya Ndiaye, Besancon, France, graduate student in French; Anne Dotter, Offendorf, France, doctoral student in American Studies; and Badou Bousso, doctoral student in French from Saint-Louis, Senegal.

The panel discussion will be followed by a question and answer session.
