KU Community Outreach Center seeks volunteers for Children's Holiday Party

LAWRENCE -- The Center for Community Outreach at the University of Kansas is seeking volunteers to help with the annual Children's Holiday Party from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the Kansas Union Ballroom.

Donations from the "Today Show" in New York and the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence help provide refreshments for the more than 500 children expected to attend. The Mentoring in the Lives of Kids (MILK) program, CCO and the Boys and Girls Club are hosts for the party.

This year, the holiday party will celebrate cultures from around the world. The children may explore examples of important holidays in several cultures and learn more about how those holidays are celebrated. Each child will have a chance to create crafts projects.

To learn more about volunteering for the afternoon, contact Veronica Pastore, MILK co-coordinator at (785) 864-4072 or or call the Center for Community Outreach (785) 864-4073 or visit CCO online at

The "Today Show" receives toy donations from national, regional and local businesses and then distributes them to cities throughout the United States. Through a grant application, the KU Center for Community Outreach received 1,000 holiday toy donations from "Today" nine years ago, and the show has renewed the grant every year since. The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence has also provided donations for the party for the past nine years.

The Center for Community Outreach at the University of Kansas aspires to provide students with a foundation for life-long service by challenging, educating and empowering them to meet community needs through volunteering. CCO is a student-run, student-funded organization comprised of 14 volunteer programs and partnerships with many campus and community agencies.
