KU's Kansas Public Radio fund drive exceeds goals, sets on-air appeal record

LAWRENCE -- Kansas Public Radio's Fall Fanfare membership drive has exceeded its goal and set a record for money raised through on-air appeals for pledges to support the University of Kansas station.

KPR raised more than $213,000 during the weeklong campaign that began Oct. 14 with a goal of $210,000. The money raised included more than $125,000 through on-air appeals to new and renewing members. The rest was raised through a direct-mail campaign.

"This is the most money we've ever raised on air," said Janet Campbell, director of Kansas Public Radio. "I think it shows how much our listeners and listener-members value Kansas Public Radio."

All funds raised during spring and fall membership drives directly support programming services.

The station gained 308 new members, and 1,373 listeners renewed their memberships. An additional $19,000 was raised through challenge grants, in which a company or individual will donate money if KPR can raise a certain level of funding during a show.

More than 100 people volunteered to answer phones during the eight-day, on-air drive. Phones were staffed from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. Area restaurants donated meals and beverages for volunteers' breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

"Our staff and volunteers worked hard for eight days to make this happen. This is testament to their work and dedication," Campbell said.
