KU to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month; comedian Carlos Mencia to perform

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month starting Thursday with more than 20 events including performances by Comedy Central's Carlos Mencia and Mexican dance group Atotonilco Folklorico.

An event featuring music, games and cultural crafts kicks off the celebration at noon Thursday, Sept. 15, in front of the Kansas Union. Atotonilco Folklorico will perform at 7 that night in the Kansas Union Ballroom

Mencia performs Oct. 4 at the Lied Center in an event co-sponsored with Student Union Activities. Mencia, who presently hosts his own national cable TV program Mind of Mencia, is best known for two solo HBO specials. He has made appearances on numerous TV shows including recurring roles on Disney Channel's "The Proud Family" plus he appeared in two movies, "29 Palms" and "Outta' Time." Tickets for Mencia's show are $8 for students with KU I.D. and $16 for general public.

Other events include a Sept. 20 presentation "Latinos in Higher Education" by Jeanette Castellanos of the University of California, Irvine, and a special observance at a KU Women's Soccer game Sept. 25 sponsored by the Latino Council, an organization of KU Latino faculty and staff.

The theme for the 2005 Hispanic Heritage Month is "Paving the Way for Future Generations." KU events will be sponsored by the Multicultural Resource Center, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO), Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. - Mu Beta Chapter, the Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. -- Delta Alpha Chapter and the Latino Council.
