'For Your Ears Only' fund-raiser for Audio-Reader returns Sept. 23, 24

LAWRENCE – When Al and Eileen Rogers began volunteering for Audio-Reader earlier this year, they had no idea that their volunteer duties would eventually include making vinyl record bowls in their oven at home. Dave Nigro never dreamed that he'd be fashioning clocks from damaged records either.

Back by popular demand, these custom-made record bowls will be joined by vinyl record clocks at Audio-Reader's third annual "For Your Ears Only" benefit Sept. 23 and 24 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds to raise funds for the University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network.

Used audio equipment and thousands of albums, CDs, and tapes will be available to the public for suggested donations. New to the event this year are handcrafted earrings and a small number of musical instruments. One item is a hand-knitted sweater featuring the words "No you may not read my sweater" in Braille across the front.

Audio-Reader staff and volunteers will continue the tradition of dressing in James Bond costumes for the Friday evening sneak preview shopping from 6 to 9 pm Sept. 23, with a $5 donation requested to attend this "first pick" opportunity. Admission is free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Members of the KU Delta Gamma sorority will serve refreshments dressed as Bond girls.

Proceeds from the "For Your Ears Only" fundraiser will help Audio-Reader provide readings of current books, magazines, newspapers, and other printed materials to the blind and print-disabled. Donated items are still being accepted for this year's benefit. Items may be dropped off at Audio-Reader, 1120 W. 11th Street in Lawrence, or at KCUR, 4825 Troost, Suite 202, in Kansas City, Mo.
