Guthrie named Docking Teaching Professor in KU School of Business

LAWRENCE --Professor James Guthrie has been appointed to the William and Judy Docking Teaching Professorship at the University of Kansas School of Business.

William and Judy Docking created the Docking Teaching Professorship in Business to recognize and encourage excellence in classroom teaching. It is awarded to a full professor of business who demonstrates a history of high-quality teaching and student support, who has a distinguished and active research program, and who has a demonstrated record of accomplished service to KU and the business school.

" I have reviewed Dr. Guthrie's record of teaching and scholarship for which the words outstanding and excellent seem wholly inadequate," William "Bill" Docking said. "Judy and I are honored to have our names associated with Dr. Guthrie's through the professorship."

Bill Docking, who recently completed a 10-year term with the Kansas Board of Regents, said he firmly believes a strong state economy begins with access to quality public education.

" Our family has demonstrated a high commitment to keep the best faculty members at KU," Docking said. "I've watched some of the best and brightest at KU and other regents universities be lured away by higher salaries. It concerns me because it affects the quality of education."

Guthrie, who joined KU in 1988, teaches human resource management to undergraduate, master's and doctoral students. His main research focuses on the relationship between human resource management practices and firm effectiveness, and his findings have been published in numerous leading journals. He has received the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Association of Business Doctoral Students, the Guy O. and Rosa Lee Mabry Research Fellow Award for best published paper, and the Center for Teaching Excellence Outstanding Teacher Award. Guthrie has also been a visiting professor for universities in Italy, Ireland and New Zealand.
