'Heroes Night' to commemorate Sept. 11, feature flyover at Saturday football game

LAWRENCE -- An Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker will fly over Memorial Stadium at the University of Kansas before the Kansas-Appalachian State football game this Saturday, Sept. 10. The flyover will commemorate the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Saturday is "Heroes Night" at Memorial Stadium, honoring the service of the nation's armed services personnel, veterans, firefighters and EMS personnel, law enforcement members and teachers. Tickets to the game for these individuals will be $5 each, and their family members can purchase tickets for $25 each.

The first 25,000 fans to enter the stadium will receive a Jayhawk football t-shirt, courtesy of adidas, the athletic shoe and apparel company, and Crown Automotive, 3400 Iowa St. In addition, all members of the Junior Jayhawks club will receive one reserved ticket to the game when they present their membership card at any ticket booth at the stadium. Family members can purchase additional tickets for $25 each.

Saturday also is Band Day, with more than 30 high school bands performing at halftime with the KU Band. The annual Band Day parade will be at 1:30 p.m. in downtown Lawrence. The parade will start at Seventh and Massachusetts streets and go south.

The flyover by the KC-135 Stratotanker, based at Forbes Field in Topeka, will operate according to Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The event has been approved by the FAA.

WHERE: Memorial Stadium, University of Kansas, Lawrence.

WHY: In conjunction with "Heroes Night."
