Haricombe is final candidate for dean of University Libraries to visit campus

LAWRENCE — The fifth and final candidate to be the next dean of libraries at the University of Kansas will visit campus this week and conduct a public forum Thursday, April 13. KU is conducting a national search for a replacement for Stella Bentley, who is retiring this summer.

The candidate, Lorraine Haricombe, dean of university libraries at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, will visit campus April 12-14. She will give a public presentation and attend a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. April 13 in Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union. Additional information about each candidate will be posted at www.lib.ku.edu/dean/.

Haricombe earned her bachelor’s and graduate degrees in library and information science at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. She earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in library and information science at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Before joining Bowling Green State in 2001, she worked in the University of Northern Illinois libraries and as a library director in South Africa.

KU hopes the next dean will begin work by August. The University Libraries have a $15 million annual budget and 180 staff members and employ 250 students annually. The system contains more than 4 million printed volumes and more than 100 searchable electronic databases. University Libraries catalog 33,000 serials annually and house more than 500,000 maps and 1 million photographic images. A $5.8 million library annex is under construction on KU’s west campus.

Search committee members are listed at www.news.ku.edu/2005/november/9/library.shtml.
