Chancellor, chair of art department issue statements on death of painting professor

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Judith McCrea, professor of painting and chair of the art department, made the following statements in response to the death this morning of Robert Brawley, professor of painting. Brawley died at a Kansas City hospital following a six-month battle with cancer. A nationally renowned realist painter, Brawley’s works have been in more than 18 public museum exhibits and more than 30 national painting and drawing exhibitions since 1990. Brawley, a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, had taught at KU since 1988 and was chair of the art department for five years.

Chancellor Hemenway:

“Robert Brawley was a prominent painter whose works have drawn national acclaim as well as an tremendous teacher who inspired his students to take risks and do the best work they can possibly do. We are all deeply saddened by the news of his death. On behalf of the KU community, I would like to extend our condolences to his family and friends.”

Professor McCrea:

“Bob Brawley’s work was hyperrealist, choosing objects with complex narrative implications and symbolism. His work was regularly included in exhibitions featuring the best realist painters in the nation and world. He was a highly respected teacher and intellectual whose knowledge of art reflected in widespread pursuits in philosophy, theory and art criticism. He will be greatly missed.”
