KU Office of Multicultural Affairs to host 30th annual graduation banquet

LAWRENCE — The Office of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Kansas will host its 30th annual graduation banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 20, in the Kansas Union.

This year’s banquet will reflect multiculturalism as a whole through the celebration of culture and academic success. The theme is “Mitakuye Oyasin: We Are All Related.” Former KU professor Cornel Pewewardy will be the guest speaker

Pewewardy is Comanche-Kiowa and a member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma. Pewewardy is the dean of academic instruction at Comanche Nation College in Lawton, Okla. He came to Comanche Nation College in 2005 from KU, where he was an associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Leadership. While at KU he taught courses in multicultural education. His joint appointment at KU was in the Center for Indigenous Nations Studies, where he taught a graduate course in applied indigenous leadership. Pewewardy is also an adjunct instructor in the American Indian Studies Program at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence and Department of Education at Cameron University in Lawton.

Graduates are invited as honored guests and are asked to RSVP. Public tickets are $20. Tickets are available until 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at the Office of Multicultural Affairs, 145 Strong Hall. For more information, call (785) 864-4351.
