KU announces Starratt as fourth of five candidates for dean of University Libraries

LAWRENCE — The fourth of five candidates to be the next dean of libraries at the University of Kansas will visit campus this week and conduct a public forum Thursday, April 6. KU is conducting a national search for a replacement for Stella Bentley, who is retiring this summer.

The candidate, Jay Starratt, associate vice chancellor for information technology at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, will visit campus April 5-7. He will give a public presentation and attend a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. April 6 in Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union. One remaining candidate will be announced April 10. Additional information about each candidate will be posted at

Starratt, who also has been dean of library and information services at SIU for the past decade, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in librarianship at Emory University in Atlanta. Before joining SIU, he worked in libraries at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Emory.

KU hopes the next dean will begin work by August. The University Libraries have a $15 million annual budget and 180 staff members and employ 250 students annually. The system contains more than 4 million printed volumes and more than 100 searchable electronic databases. University Libraries catalog 33,000 serials annually and house more than 500,000 maps and 1 million photographic images. A $5.8 million library annex is under construction on KU’s west campus.
