Washington Post correspondent to deliver Muncy Journalism and Politics Lecture

LAWRENCE — Juliet Eilperin, national reporter for the Washington Post, will deliver the inaugural Muncy Journalism and Politics Lecture on Thursday, April 13, at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.

Eilperin will discuss her new book Fight Club Politics: How Partisanship is Poisoning the House of Representatives at 7:30 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“Each year the Muncy Journalism and Politics Lecture will bring a renowned speaker to the Dole Institute to address the ever-changing relationship between politics, policymaking and the media,” said Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute.

The lecture series has been endowed by Martha E. “Betty” Muncy, the retired owner, publisher and editor of the Dodge City Daily Globe.

Eilperin, who has covered Congress for more than a decade, said she had noticed a decided change in recent years.

“The House of Representatives — the ‘people’s House’ — is supposed to be the body of government closest to ordinary citizens, reflecting their needs and desires,” she said. “But it has drifted from its roots in recent years, as lawmakers have become deaf to voters and fixated on maintaining their power inside the Beltway.”
