First Nations Student Association at KU to hold 18th annual pow-wow

LAWRENCE — The First Nations Student Association at the University of Kansas will hold its 18th annual pow-wow Saturday, April 22, at Robinson Center gymnasium. The KU Office of Multicultural Affairs is also a sponsor.

Grand entries will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Headman Dancer is Charlie Lewis, Dine/Paiute, Bishop, Calif. Headlady Dancer is Cassie Kitcheyan, San Carlos/Winnebago, Winnebago, Neb. Emcee is Manny King, Northern Cheyenne/Dine, Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence.

Arena director is Dana Warrington, Menominee/Potawatomi. Host Northern Drum is Meskwaki Nation from Tama, Iowa. Host Southern Drum is Thunder Hill from Weatherford, Okla. Head Gourd Dancer is Hyde Toppah, Kiowa/Dine, Weatherford, Okla.

The Indian taco sale will be provided by the Dine Club, Haskell Indian Nations University.

In conjunction with the pow-wow, the Indigenous Nations Studies graduate fundraising/grant writing class will be accepting donations for the Haskell Little Nations Academic Center from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Little Nations Academic Center provides culturally sensitive daycare and educational enhancement for 23 preschool children. The center is primarily funded through charitable contributions and limited federal funding.

The center needs everything from glue sticks and crayons to bleach and paper towels. The class will also accept cash donations.
