KU Continuing Education offers new online orientation course for psychology majors

LAWRENCE — Continuing Education at the University of Kansas is adding a course to its online Independent Study curriculum. Orientation Seminar in Psychology (PSYC 102) will be available to students throughout Kansas and across the nation for one hour of academic credit.

This pioneering course, developed by Paul Atchley, associate professor of psychology at KU, will be the first required online course at the university. Degree-seeking students will enroll through the psychology department, and all other students will enroll through Continuing Education.

PSYC 102 is designed to encourage students to take a goal-oriented approach toward planning their psychology major. It explores the major, careers in psychology, post-graduate options and opportunities within and outside of the department for enhancing their educational experiences. Support for the development of this course was provided by the KU Center for Teaching Excellence.

KU student Christopher Cushing, who helped field-test the course, said, “When I came to the University of Kansas, I knew I wanted a Ph.D. in psychology, but I had no idea how to achieve that goal. This course is exactly what any psychology major needs regardless of current or future career goals. It takes all the information a student needs and puts it in one place. This course will save all students time and give them a rich understanding of their options for a career in psychology.”

KU’s Independent Study Program offers more than 150 distance-education courses on a nonsemester basis. Student can enroll and begin their courses throughout the year.

For more information, contact Independent Study Student Services at (785) 864-7886 or view the catalog and enroll online at the Continuing Education Web site.
