KU Environmental Stewardship Program reports increase in collected recyclables

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Environmental Stewardship Program saw a 6 percent increase in recyclables collected in the last fiscal year, collecting more than 524 tons of material compared to more than 494 tons in fiscal year 2005.

Most notable was a 22 percent increase in cardboard collection. Jeff Severin, program manager, attributes the growth in cardboard recycling to increased participation at dining facilities such as The Underground at Wescoe Hall and residential dining centers.

The Environmental Stewardship Program has also boosted efforts to increase recycling awareness through a grant provided by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Bureau of Waste Management. The grant project aims to increase cardboard collections from campus facilities and expand recycling capacity at KU through the purchase of additional collection bins and larger, more efficient baling equipment.

Efforts to keep recovery rates on the rise will continue this fall. The program will place new recycling bins for cardboard and other materials throughout campus and provide more opportunities for students, faculty and staff to learn about recycling and waste reduction.

Numbers reported for fiscal year 2006 do not include an additional 3 tons of steel cans and No. 2 plastic, materials that were not reported in fiscal year 2005, nor does it include the hundreds of computers, monitors and other equipment recycled through the program’s electronic waste program.
