Three KU faculty receive Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards to teach abroad

LAWRENCE — Three University of Kansas faculty members have received Fulbright Senior Scholar Awards for the 2006-07 academic year.

Burdett Loomis, professor of political science, will be teaching a week-long seminar in Argentina Aug. 18-25 as Fulbright Senior Specialist with a historian from the University of Texas-Dallas. Loomis is the first KU faculty member to be selected to participate in the new Fulbright Senior Specialist program.

Patrick Suzeau, associate professor of dance, will teach in Lithuania as a Fulbright Scholar next spring.

Bill Tuttle, professor of American studies, will teach in the Netherlands as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair next spring.

Including Loomis, Suzeau and Tuttle, 275 KU faculty have received Fulbright grants since the program’s beginning more than 50 years ago. The Office of International Programs coordinates all of the Fulbright programs at KU.

Loomis and Steve Rabe, a historian at the University of Texas-Dallas, are traveling to Argentina’s University of Rio Cuarto to present a lecture and discussion series titled “From the ’60s to Our Days: Main Trends in United States Political, Cultural and Social Movements.” One goal of the seminar is to facilitate the development of an American Studies program at the university. Loomis’ topics will include discussions of political parties, elections, presidential-congressional relations, religion and politics, among others.

Suzeau will teach dance at the Lithuanian Music Academy in Vilnius, Lithuania. Although the academy is well-known throughout Europe for its music and theater programs, its dance program is relatively new. A specialist in contemporary dance technique and choreography, ballet, East Indian classical dance and Laban Movement Analysis, Suzeau plans to introduce these elements of technique, choreography and analysis in his classes in Lithuania. Much of this will be new to the students who are trained in the Russian classical ballet tradition.

Tuttle will be teaching a seminar titled “American People in an Era of Social, Political and Cultural Change” at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands, as the John Adams Chair of American History. Awards in the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program are considered among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program.

One of the oldest and largest international exchange programs in the world, the Fulbright Scholar Program offers grants for college and university faculty and administrators to lecture and conduct research in 140 countries. The Fulbright Scholar Program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars behalf of the U.S. Department of State.
