KU professor honored for contributions to clinical child psychology

LAWRENCE — A University of Kansas professor instrumental in starting the clinical child psychology doctoral program at KU has been honored with the American Psychological Association’s prestigious Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology.

Michael Roberts, professor and director of the clinical child psychology program, was presented with the award at the association’s 114th annual convention last week in New Orleans.

“Michael Roberts has contributed a great deal to the field of clinical child psychology, as well as to the University of Kansas. This award is fitting recognition of his many years of outstanding teaching and research,” said Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

Roberts earned a doctorate in clinical child psychology from Purdue University. He has written or co-edited 17 books, including Handbook of Clinical Child Psychology and Handbook of Pediatric Psychology. In addition, he has published almost 200 journal articles and book chapters focusing on training and professional issues and the application of psychology to understanding and influencing children’s physical and mental health. Roberts was editor of three professional psychology journals and is the incoming editor of Professional Psychology: Research and Practice.

Roberts chaired the psychological association’s Committee on Children, Youth and Families and recently completed two terms as chair of the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology. He is on the board of directors of the American Academy of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. He is fellow of the American Psychological Association and an American Board of Professional Psychology diplomat.
