School of Business brings transportation expert to KU for Chandler lecture

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Business will present its 2006 Anderson Chandler Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at the Lied Center.

This year’s speaker will be Matthew Rose, chairman, president and CEO of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. Rose will address what he sees as a growing problem in the nation’s transportation system. Without preventive action, he fears, the problem could have dire national consequences.

Rose said the concern lies in freight and rail capacity. In the past, the railroad industry has felt the sting of excess capacity — idle railcars and unused track — brought about by declining demand. In the past few years, surging demand has reversed the situation. Rose said finding a balance between capacity and demand is the only way to avoid a potential crisis.

Rose joined Burlington Northern in 1993 and was in several positions before the company merged with Santa Fe Pacific Corp. Following the merger in 1995, Rose was appointed vice president of chemicals. He has also held management positions with Triple Crown Services and Schneider National and International Utilities, a trucking conglomerate. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri, with a major in marketing and a minor in logistics.

The Chandler Lecture Series began in 1997 and is made possible by Anderson Chandler, CEO, president and director of Fidelity State Bank and Trust Co. of Topeka and vice president and director of First Bank of Newton. The lecture is free to the public. Tickets are not required.
