Four KU groups to benefit from football tailgating fundraiser

LAWRENCE — Four University of Kansas groups will benefit when the 2006 version of the “Proud to Be a Jayhawk” tailgating fundraising promotion at home football games kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2.

The Global Awareness Program, Global Partners Program, Center for Community Outreach and Marching Jayhawks will receive $1 from every KU football program sold.

Guidelines for 2006 permit fans to tailgate with alcohol during a three-hour pre-game period and during halftime in the designated tailgating area. Tailgating with alcohol will not otherwise be permitted during game time.

“This will be the sixth year of responsible tailgating, and we’re so pleased our fans have helped make it part of the great game-day atmosphere around Memorial Stadium,” said Jim Marchiony, associate athletics director. “We hope that even those fans who don’t tailgate will consider buying a KU football program to lend support to the worthwhile activities promoted by our ‘Proud to Be a Jayhawk’ initiative.”

Consistent with Board of Regents and KU policies, alcohol can be consumed only by individuals of legal age during this official fundraising event in the designated area and only during the specified times.

The tailgating guidelines:

— Alcohol may be consumed only during a three-hour period before kickoff and during halftime in the designated tailgating area.
— Underage drinking, disorderly conduct or other unlawful conduct will not be tolerated.
— No kegs or other containers with a capacity greater than 1 gallon may be brought into this area. Fans are strongly encouraged not to use or bring glass containers.
— Alcohol may not be brought into Memorial Stadium.

Last year, $3,670 in tailgating funds from football program sales were divided equally among the Center for Community Outreach, the Spirit Squad, the sports clubs and the Nichols League Student Leadership Fund.
