LAWRENCE — When the 1.7 million members of Veterans of Foreign Wars receive the September issue of VFW magazine in their mailboxes this week, they will see four University of Kansas students on the cover.

Dan Parker, a sophomore from McPherson; Evan Hoyt, a sophomore from Neodesha; Charlie House, a junior from Garnett; and Ben Lockwood, a junior from Prince George, Va., are featured in an article titled “From Combat to College: War Veterans on Campus.” The magazine’s cover photo shows the foursome in front of Watson Library on the KU campus in Lawrence. Inside the magazine is a picture of Parker, Hoyt, House and Lockwood in front of the Campanile, a World War II memorial.

“I thought the opportunity to be on the cover of VFW magazine was a great way to bring some attention to veterans on campuses around the nation,” said Parker, who served with the Marines in Iraq in 2003 and 2004.

All four students say their transition from the military to college life has been a smooth one and that their peers and professors want to learn about their experiences.

“They seem interested for the most part,” said House, a former member of the Kansas Army National Guard. “They will ask me what it was like overseas and whether I agree or not with the U.S.’ involvement in the war. I haven’t had any negative experiences with students or teachers.”

The four students will also be in the VFW’s national convention magazine.

“I am so proud, and so are my family and friends,” said Hoyt.

KU will honor members of the military at Soldier Recognition Night, which will take place in Memorial Stadium during the Sept. 9 football game against the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
