Statement by chancellor on death of KU student Andrew Rotman

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway made the following statement today regarding the death Sunday of KU student Andrew Rotman, 19, a sophomore majoring in physics from Cawker City. He was a 2005 graduate of Lakeside High School in Downs and a recipient of the Summerfield Scholarship, awarded to top students graduating from Kansas high schools in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement, record of community service and leadership.

Rotman, who lived in Templin Hall and was an officer in the KU Association of University Residence Halls, died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after collapsing at the hall. An autopsy is pending. Counselors from KU Counseling and Psychological Services sent grief counselors to meet with Templin Hall residents.

“On behalf of the entire KU community, I want to express my profound sorrow at the death of Andrew Rotman. The sudden loss of such a bright young man who was filled with promise and who had already begun an active college career in the short time he was at KU fills us with great sadness. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at Dispatch Christian Reform Church near Downs. Visitation will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the church. Domoney Funeral Home in Downs is in charge of arrangements.
