KU announces 315 student athletes named to 2005 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has announced its 315 student athletes named to the 2005 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. They will be honored at halftime of the KU-Baylor men’s basketball game Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Allen Fieldhouse.

Student athletes who achieved a semester grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the spring or fall 2005 semester are eligible for the honor. Fifty-nine student athletes earned a 4.0 GPA for one or both semesters.

Honorees represent 25 Kansas counties plus 36 other states, territories and countries. Kansas home counties are: Barber, Barton, Cloud, Cowley, Crawford, Douglas, Ellsworth, Finney, Franklin, Geary, Harvey, Johnson, Kingman, Labette, Leavenworth, Lyon, McPherson, Miami, Reno, Riley, Saline, Sedgwick, Seward, Shawnee and Wyandotte.

“While our student athletes excel in competition, they also excel in the classroom,” said Chancellor Robert Hemenway. “We are proud of both their academic and athletic achievements.”

Athletics Director Lew Perkins said, “The large number of student athletes receiving this honor is a credit not only to these outstanding young men and women but also to our faculty and student-support staff. All of us are committed to creating an atmosphere that promotes success on the field and in the classroom.”

The Athletic Director’s Honor Roll recognizes students in intercollegiate baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, football, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field or volleyball. KU is a member of the Big 12 Conference.

The student athletes are listed by home county, state or country, with their parents’ names, high school or previous school attended, current student level, status or degree received, their sport and GPA.

The sports are abbreviated as follows:

BA — baseball
BBM — men’s basketball
BBW — women’s basketball
FB — football
GM — men’s golf
GW — women’s golf
RW — rowing
SC — soccer
SB — softball
SW — swimming/diving
TW — tennis
TXM — men’s cross country, track & field
TXW — women’s cross country, track & field
VB — volleyball

Abbreviations for degrees earned by student athletes include the following:

BGS — bachelor of general studies
BFA — bachelor of fine arts
BS— bachelor of science
BSB — bachelor of science in business
BSE — bachelor of science in education
BSJ — bachelor of science in journalism
MA — master of arts
