KU names Texas dean as third of four finalists for provost to visit campus

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas today announced the third finalist to be provost and executive vice chancellor succeeding David Shulenburger, who is stepping down from the post after 13 years as KU’s chief academic officer.

The finalist is Richard W. Lariviere (La-riv-yair), dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker chair in the humanities and a fellow in the IC2 Institute, a research center.

During his three-day visit to campus, Lariviere will give a public presentation from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the Dole Institute of Politics, which will be followed by a public reception.

An Illinois native, Lariviere, 56, earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Iowa and received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Texas faculty in 1982. A professor of Sanskrit and the Ralph B. Thomas Regents professor in Asian studies for a decade, he served as director of Asian studies and associate vice president for
international programs before being named dean in 1999.

An expert on Indian legal history, Lariviere is the author of dozens of articles and several books on the subject. His book on Indian legal procedure was selected as the best book of the year on South Asia by the Italian CESMEO Institute. He also is corporate consultant specializing in advisory services for companies doing business in India and serves on the
board of an Indian technology company.

The fourth and final finalist for provost will be announced Feb. 6 and will visit campus Feb. 8-10. A fifth finalist has withdrawn from consideration. More information about the search and finalists is available online at
