Panel of KU experts, director of Islamic Society to discuss Mohammed cartoons

LAWRENCE — A panel of scholars from the University of Kansas and the director of the Islamic Society of Lawrence will speak this week about the international protests and violence sparked by the publication of cartoons in Danish media depicting the Prophet Mohammed.

The public is invited to “Respecting Religion/Exercising Freedom of the Press: Cultural Clashes on an International Stage,” which will take place from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Gridiron Room of the Burge Union. The forum is sponsored by the Office of International Programs.

Panelists include Tim Miller, professor and chair of religious studies; Ted Frederickson, professor of journalism; Moussa Elbayoumy, director of the Islamic Society of Lawrence; Dennis Anderson, managing editor of the Lawrence Journal-World; and Mike Hoeflich, John H. and John M. Kane Distinguished Professor of Law.
