Former nuclear scientist for Saddam Hussein to speak at KU

LAWRENCE — Saddam Hussein’s chief nuclear scientist will speak at the University of Kansas on Tuesday, March 7. Mahdi Obeidi, author of The Bomb In My Garden, will be the featured speaker for Student Union Activities and Student Senate’s annual Student Lecture Series at 7:30 p.m. in Budig Hall.

Obeidi was Hussein’s “nuclear mastermind” for 10 years and served as director-general of Iraq’s Ministry of Industry and Military Industrialization for part of that time. In 2003, after Hussein’s ouster, Obeidi contacted U.S. Intelligence personnel and led them to the spot in his backyard where he had buried plans and parts of a uranium enrichment device. The plans remain the largest piece of evidence that Iraq had a strategy for obtaining weapons of mass destruction.

The event inspired the title for Obeidi’s acclaimed book The Bomb In My Garden, which is being adapted for a feature film starring Johnny Depp.

Obeidi’s presentation is free and open to the public. Vouchers may be picked up at the SUA Box Office on the fourth floor of the Kansas Union. For more information about this or other SUA events, call the SUA box office at 864-SHOW or visit the organization’s Web site at www.suaevents.com.
