Hall Center, Edwards Campus present second Abraham’s Children lecture

LAWRENCE — Mark Nanos, lecturer in religious studies at the University of Kansas and the Soebbing Visiting Scholar at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., will present “Us and Them: The Promise and Limits of Abrahamic Descent” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, in Regnier Hall auditorium of the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

Nanos, winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Jewish/Christian Relations for The Mystery of Romans: The Jewish Context of Paul's Letter (1996), will trace how these traditions emphasize various ideals from the story of Abraham — for example, the Divine promise to make his descendants a “great nation” — while downplaying other elements that may be more promising for inter-faith relations.

The Abraham’s Children series, designed to explore the shared heritage of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, continues March 21 when Reza Aslan, a scholar of comparative religion and author of No god but God: The Origins, Evolution and Future of Islam will speak on “The Sons of Ismael.”

All of the lectures are free and open to the public.
