Statement by Chancellor Hemenway
re: Governor's state budget proposals

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway issued the following statement today in response to the release of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' state budget proposals:

"The University of Kansas greatly appreciates the Governor's continued recognition of the higher education opportunities offered by KU and other institutions in the state.

"During her State of the State speech last night, the Governor noted the Kansas economy is improving. Her decision to increase the state's investment in higher education will extend this positive economic trend by offering Kansas companies an educated workforce that's prepared to do business in a global economy.

"The Governor's budget also appropriately provides the funding for faculty salary enhancement under a plan she initiated to fulfill Senate Bill 345. These funds are crucial to ensure that KU and Regents institutions are able to retain and recruit an excellent faculty.

"I look forward to working with the Kansas Legislature and the Governor's office on the budget. I will stress that KU strives to be efficient in expending state funds to continue meeting its mission of improving Kansans' quality of life through superior educational offerings and through trailblazing research."
