KU’s spring semester classes to start on Friday, Jan. 20

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas students will begin their spring semester classes this Friday, Jan. 20.

Semesters have usually begun Thursdays, but the Kansas Board of Regents last summer approved changing the first day of the 2006 spring semester to Friday to correct an error in the university’s academic calendar. The 2005-06 calendar, adopted more than three years ago, mistakenly made the spring semester one day longer instead of the traditional 75 days.

Because of the change, some official academic dates — ranging from deadlines to add or drop a class to late-enrollment fee penalties — are one day later than previously announced or in school planners published last summer. A complete list of affected dates is below:

Continuing-student enrollment ends — all careers: 1/19/06
Undergraduate non-New Student Orientation advising and enrollment: 1/19/06
New nondegree enrollment: 1/19/06

$75 late-enrollment fee begins: 1/20/06
$75 late-enrollment fee ends: 1/26/06
Last day to enroll online: 1/26/06
Petition late enrollment begins (offline): 1/27/06
Last day to add and change sections online: 1/26/06
Last day to add/change sections without instructor signature: 1/26/06
Add/change of section with instructor signature begins (offline): 1/27/06
Last day to drop a class online: 2/9/06
Last day to cancel: 2/9/06
First period drop ends: 2/9/06

Second period drop ends: 4/6/06
