Kansas Public Radio News to broadcast Gov. Sebelius' State of the State address

LAWRENCE -- Facing another contentious legislative session, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius delivers her annual State of the State address Monday, Jan. 9. Kansas Public Radio will again provide live coverage of the speech beginning at 7 p.m.

The broadcast will be anchored by J. Schafer, KPR News director, with speech analysis from Peter Hancock, KPR statehouse bureau chief. KPR also will broadcast the Republican Partyu response immediately after the State of the State address.

"We're pleased to offer KPR listeners access to the entire speech, so they can hear the governor's plan in full," Schafer said. "This is a public service we've offered for many years and are proud to continue."

Sebelius will present her budget plan for the upcoming year and the programs she intends to push during the upcoming legislative session. The normal political wrangling will be compounded this year by the gubernatorial election in November. Sebelius has not officially announced her candidacy but is widely expected to do so.

Also facing the governor and the legislature are the issues of school finances, Medicaid funding and expanded gambling.

KPR is offering its broadcast to other public radio stations through a satellite feed. Stations in Pittsburg, Garden City, Wichita and Kansas City, Mo., are expected to air the coverage.

Exclusive support for the broadcast is being provided by Kansas Farm Bureau.

KPR, licensed to the University of Kansas, broadcasts on KANU 91.5 FM in Lawrence, KANH 89.7 FM in Emporia, KANV 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City and K210CR 89.9 FM in Atchison. KPR also can be heard on the Web at kpr.ku.edu.
