KU, agencies sponsor free Wyandotte Co. 'Evening of Hope'; Cedric Jennings to talk

KANSAS CITY, KAN. -- The University of Kansas is joining with Kansas City-area community agencies to sponsor "An Evening of Hope: Family Night 2006" from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Performing Arts Building Theatre, 7250 State Ave. in Kansas City, Kan.

The event, designed to celebrate families and students in the Wyandotte County community, begins with a music and dance performance from the Gateway Highsteppers Drill Team, a local youth dance troupe.

Keynote speaker is Cedric Jennings, who is the subject of a book, A Hope in the Unseen, by Ron Suskind, staff writer for the Wall Street Journal. Suskind won the Pultizer Prize for feature writing for a two-part series on Jennings, who was attending one of the toughest high schools in Washington, D.C., and determined to study his way out. Jennings eventually graduated from Ivy League schools with two master's degrees.

This event is free to the public and seating for this event is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The following organizations are co-sponsoring this event: Wyandotte County Early Childhood Interagency Coordinating Council and Parents University; KU GEAR UP Programs; KU Educational Talent Search; Pathways Partnership – KU Edwards Campus, Kansas City Kansas Community College and Kansas City Kansas Public Schools; Avila University Upward Bound Program; Donnelly College Student Support Services; KU Institute of Educational Research and Public Service; KU Upward Bound Program; and the KU Math and Science Center.
