University mourns loss of James Vequist, director of Budig Hall, Hoch Auditoria

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway issued a statement today in response to the death July 22 of James Vequist, director of Budig Hall and Hoch Auditoria.

“On behalf of the university family, I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of James Vequist, who died Saturday after a battle with cancer. He was devoted to his work serving the faculty and students. His passing is a great loss for this university. He will be missed,” Hemenway said.

A celebration of life will be held for Vequist at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at the K.S. “Boots” Adams Alumni Center on KU’s Lawrence Campus. The celebration will begin with a buffet lunch and sharing of photographs of Vequist. At 1 p.m., there will be a short program of remembrance of his life and passions. Those who attend will be welcome to share their memories.

Don Steeples, Dean A. McGee Professor of Applied Geophysics and vice provost for scholarly support, said Vequist’s service touched the careers and lives of many at KU.

“Jim served tens of thousands of students and hundreds of faculty in his 10-year career as director of the high-technology Budig Hall auditoria. He was especially proud that he never had to cancel someone’s class because of technical difficulties. Jim fought valiantly and continued to work above and beyond the call of duty these past few months,” Steeples said.
