KU health, sport and exercise sciences department announces annual awards

LAWRENCE — The health, sport and exercise sciences department in the School of Education at the University of Kansas honored 12 outstanding students during a ceremony in May. Eight awards and four scholarships, valued at more than $6,000, were presented to students by the faculty.

Students receiving the awards are listed by hometown, level in school, degree field, award, parents’ names and high school.

DOUGLAS COUNTY
From Lawrence
Aaron W. Clopton, fall 2005 graduate with a doctorate in sports administration, received the Wayne Osness Outstanding Doctoral Student Award in recognition of his outstanding scholarship, leadership, willingness to help others and involvement in department activities. He is the son of Gary and Judy Clopton, husband of Sarah and father of daughter Tatum. He is a graduate of Andover High School. Clopton and his family plan to move to Huntington, W.Va., where he will be an assistant professor at Marshall University.

JOHNSON COUNTY
From Overland Park
Diaa Elashkar, senior in the health and physical education teacher licensure program, received the Reginald R. Strait Scholarship, presented to a student majoring in physical education based on classroom performance, financial need, exemplary citizenship and promise as a professional in the physical education career field. He is the son of Mervat Ibrahim and a graduate of Olathe East High School.

From Shawnee
Ashley Nicole Withers, senior in community health, received the Don Henry Health Education Scholarship, which honors a health education fourth- or fifth-year undergraduate based on academic achievement, leadership and a strong interest in health education. She is the daughter of Mike and Theressa Withers and is a graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

Sam Brethauer, master’s student in education in biomechanics, received the Walter J. Mikols Outstanding Master’s Student Award. The award recognizes academic standing, citizenship, leadership, a demonstrated willingness to support other graduate students and the department and a record of involvement in professional organizations. He is the son of Paul and Susan Brethauer and father of Kayla Marie. He is a graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences, Kansas City, Kan. He is a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist.

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY
From Lansing
Kayla Marie Buehler, junior in sport science with an emphasis in pre-physical therapy, received the Earl Falkenstein Honor Award, which recognizes an outstanding junior majoring in physical education on the basis of grades, character and leadership. She is the daughter of David and Lisa Buehler and a graduate of Lansing High School.

RUSSELL COUNTY
From Victoria
Kristen Rachelle Robben, senior in sports science with an emphasis in pre-physical therapy, received the Joie Stapleton Honor Award, which honors an outstanding senior majoring in physical education who is a good citizen of the department, has attained high academic achievement and is involved in extra-class activities. She is the daughter of Jim and Crystal Robben and a graduate of Victoria High School.

SEDGWICK COUNTY
From Wichita
Lindsey Hall, senior in sports science, received the Larry Heeb Recreation Honor Award, honoring a health, sport and exercise sciences student based on academic achievement, citizenship, leadership with a strong sense of cooperation and helpfulness to his or her fellow students. She is the daughter of Dennis and Amy Hall and a graduate of Wichita Southeast High School.

Kyle S. Schneweis, spring 2006 graduate in sports science, received the Jack Wolfe Memorial Scholarship that honors an outstanding senior majoring in physical education based on his or her grades, character and leadership. He is the son of Bill and Karen Schneweis and is a graduate of Wichita Northwest High School. He is enrolled in the KU School of Medicine this fall.

SHAWNEE COUNTY
From Topeka
Jessica Lynn Herrera, spring 2006 graduate in athletic training, received the Brian W. Luinstra Athletic Training Award that honors a senior majoring in athletic training on the basis of grades, leadership, citizenship and an involvement in athletic training professional activities and organizations. She is the daughter of Bernard and Yvorine Herrera and is a graduate of Hayden High School.

Kelli M. Dudley, spring 2006 graduate with master’s in physical education, received the Walter J. Mikols Outstanding Master’s Student Award. The award recognizes academic standing, citizenship, leadership, a demonstrated willingness to support other graduate students and the department and a record of involvement in professional organizations. She is the daughter of Mark and Kathy Dudley and a graduate of Topeka West High School.

MISSOURI
From Boonville
Elizabeth Hays Askren, master’s degree student in physical education, received the Bernie Taylor Scholarship Award, which honors a health, sport and exercise sciences student with a strong interest in enhancing his or her ability to instruct swimming on the basis of her or his grades, leadership and citizenship. She is the daughter of Ken and Linda Askren and a graduate of Booneville High School.

From St. Louis
Katherine G. Hansen, senior in health and physical education, received the George Lottes Award that recognizes an undergraduate who is a health and physical education teacher licensure student with an interest in aquatics, on the basis of her or his classroom performance, citizenship and leadership. She is the daughter of Craig and Marcia Hansen and is a graduate of Webster Groves High School.
