LAWRENCE — More than 120 University of Kansas students and recent graduates were recognized at a May 8 luncheon at the Kansas Union for completing the Global Awareness Program during the 2005-06 academic year.

To fulfill GAP requirements, students studied abroad, took classes with an international focus and participated in international co-curricular activities. The recognition event honored the 49 students and alumni who completed the program in fall 2005 and 77 who finished it during spring 2006.

Speakers and presenters of certificates at the luncheon were Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett, senior vice provost for academic affairs; Diana Carlin, dean of the Graduate School and International Programs; and Jane Irungu, GAP coordinator.

“I think that the GAP certification will help students stand out when applying for jobs or internships,” said Christina Fernandez, Washington, D.C., junior who received her GAP certification.

The GAP certification will appear on students’ transcripts and will inform future employers that the students have completed a course of study at KU that fosters international understanding.

More than 900 undergraduate students are currently enrolled in GAP, coordinated through the Office of International Programs. More than 200 KU students (including this year’s group) have completed GAP since it began at the university in fall 2004.

Students who received GAP certification are listed below by name, hometown, major or degree received, current student level, parents’ names and high school or previous school attended (when available). Individuals with double or triple majors or degrees are listed multiple times.
